What does Healthlink do?

Healthlink provides a web-based messaging service which allows the secure transmission of clinical patient information between Hospitals, Health Care Agencies and General Practitioners. 

Does Healthlink work with both public and private Hospitals?

We work with both public and private hospitals plus a number of clinical centres. The hospitals involved with Healthlink are at varying levels of participation and offer multiple services through HealthlinkOnline. 

What kind of information is available?

Hospitals can send the following patient information: Lab Results, Radiology Results, A&E Attendance Notifications, Death Notifications, Discharge Notifications, Discharge Summaries, OPD Appointment Updates, Waiting List Updates, Out-of-Hours Reports, Cardiology Reports, Outpatient Clinic Letters and Emergency Department Letters. The system also allows GPs to send information into hospitals such as Cancer, General, Specialist and Neurology Referrals and Lab and Radiology Order Requests.

Do I need a Practice Management System?

No, you can use HealthlinkOnline even if you do not have a practice management system. You can read your messages online, print them if necessary and you will also benefit from receiving patient information faster than you would by post.

How do I register a new practice or agency to use Healthlink?

To set up a new Healthlink site, complete the Application Form. Choose the relevant option for your site: 

  • New Facility – GP Practice setup request 
  • New Agency – A new site requesting a standalone referral or a Healthcare Facility requesting lab results over Healthlink. The name of the site or specialty should be the name of agency. 

  • New Central referral – Clustering referrals into a central referral account for a Hospital or Service 

How do I set up a new user at an existing Healthlink site?

Use the Application Form to submit a request for a new user at a site. Complete the form as required ensuring correct contact information is added. 

Select the User Type: 

  • New Staff At Existing Facility - Request a Healthlink Login for a User in a GP Practice.
  • New Staff At Existing Agency - Request a Healthlink Login for a User accessing a standalone referral or a User in a Healthcare Facility.
  • New Staff At Existing Central Referral - Request a Healthlink Login for a User accessing a hospital central referrals account.

How do I set up a doctor to receive reports or results from a hospital/lab? 

If a doctor with an existing Healthlink account needs to receive reports or results from a service/hospital, send an email to support.healthlink@hse.ie with the following details: 

  • Practice Name and address 
  • GP Name 

  • GPs Medical Council Number  

  • Hospital the GP requires results and messages from 

How do I install a new certificate?

Your certificate is available in your HealthlinkOnline account. The support team no longer has access to certificates, this is the only way to retrieve yours. 

To access the certificate: 

1. Log in to your HealthlinkOnline account from a PC where the certificate is installed.

2. Navigate to the Profile tab to download the certificate.

The support team have emailed the certificate password to the associated email address or Healthmail account. Contact the designated Healthlink lead in your organisation for the password. 

I can't remember my login details, how can I retrieve them?

Contact support.healthlink@hse.ie with the following details: 

  • First & Last Name 

  • Username & PIN (if known) 

  • Site name associated with Healthlink 

I can't remember my password, how do I reset it? 

  1. Click the Forgot Password on the HealthlinkOnline login page

  1. Enter your Username and PIN 

  1. A temporary password will be sent to the email address associated with your site. 

  1. Log in with the temporary password and create a new one. 

If you do not receive the email, contact support.healthlink@hse.ie 

How long will reports/results remain in my account? 

GP practice/health care facilities: Reports are held in your Healthlink account for 30 days.  Please ensure reports are downloaded or filed to a patient’s chart promptly. 

Referral Accounts: For users accessing referral accounts, referrals remain on the unprocessed screen until responded to, regardless of when the referral was received. Once a referral is responded to it will be removed from the unprocessed screen, and accessible on the Search tab when less than 30 days old. Once responded to and over 30 days old the full message will be removed from the database. 

I ordered tests on a patient but can't find results on Healthlink, what do I do?

Use the Search tab on HealthlinkOnline to search your account for any missing reports before contacting support. Use a patient’s name or DOB to search. If you still can't find them please email support.healthlink@hse.ie with the following:

  • Patient's Initials and DOB 
  • Ordering GP

  • GP that should receive or has received results by post

  • Date tests ordered

  • Date tests received

  • Type of message (i.e. lab results, radiology report).

  • Hospital or Service sending results
