Technology and Transformation Leadership Programme

Effective leadership is essential to maintaining high-quality operational effectiveness, as well as staff morale in the fast-paced and demanding healthcare industry. Technology and Transformation recognises this need and has been running a comprehensive leadership course designed to equip current and future leaders with the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the healthcare system.

This eight-day program aims to advance the effectiveness of seasoned managers by challenging them with new insights, high energy learning exercises using best practices and tools as well as networking opportunities. On the final day of the programme participants make a presentation ‘pitch’ to members of the Senior Management Team. These presentations centre on making a positive impact to the organisation through either the introduction of an application, Introduction of a new or a change in work process or the adoption of a technology.

Previous pitches have been wide and varied and include:

A new national pilot scheme will allow Technology and Transformation staff to donate blood during working hours, addressing the critical need for blood donations. With only 3% of the eligible population donating, and 1 in 4 people requiring a transfusion at some point, this initiative aims to drive participation and ensure more lives are saved.

A proposed directory management system using AI would track staff movements within Technology and Transformation, while a web-based tool would enable staff to interact with organisational charts and contact information. An AI-operated helpdesk could offer 24/7 support for minor technical issues, increasing efficiency and reducing costs.

Self-reflection was promoted as a tool for professional growth, well-being, productivity, and inter-personal dynamics. Embedding organisational change management in all projects is seen as key to increasing ICT project success. Many tools and templates were presented in order to support successful change management projects

Several initiatives aimed at improving mental health services for young people were presented, including an e-therapy game using cognitive behavioural therapy to alleviate mild to moderate depression, stress, or anxiety. Enhanced online supports and therapies, structured in layers of information, self-help, and person-to-person support, were suggested to maximise the return on investment and ensure equity of access.

Other suggestions included improving the functionality of SAP for HR needs, developing a national room booking system for better resource management, and enhancing cybersecurity through targeted email threat remediation and standardised data quality practices. Initiatives to leverage patient-specific health data from tech wearables and a confidential health check booking system for staff were also presented.

Finally, a call to prepare for the integration of Generative AI in Technology and Transformation highlights the need for upskilling and leveraging AI for tasks such as information extraction, content creation, and advanced question-answering systems, positioning Technology and Transformation for future advancements.

This leadership course is a valuable investment in the future of healthcare. By developing essential leadership skills, we can drive positive change and enhance organisational performance. The benefits of this course extend beyond individual participants, contributing to a more effective, innovative, and compassionate healthcare system.
