Windows 11 Deployment Across HSE – Solid Progress

HSE’s upgrade to Windows 11 is well underway as part of our wider programme to modernise technology and improve security across the organisation.

To date, more than 30,000 Lenovo devices have successfully moved to Windows 11, with around 1,000 more being upgraded every week. This is an important step in ensuring staff have access to the latest tools and a more secure, reliable operating system.

Accelerating the Rollout

In the coming weeks, the rollout will move into its next phase. Liaising closely with NSD and local ICT teams - on-site engineers will ensure that critical devices in the main hospitals are upgraded safely and efficiently. At the same time, non-critical devices will continue to be upgraded remotely over the network, allowing us to maintain steady progress across the health service.

Overcoming Challenges

Some of the main challenges with the rollout are the number of legacy applications still in use across HSE and some old IT infrastructure.  Some legacy applications are not supported in a Windows 11 environment, which means certain devices cannot be upgraded immediately.  The Technology and Transformation team is working closely with external vendors to reduce these blocked applications, and to ensure they are either updated or replaced where necessary.  In parallel, we are replacing some older desktops and laptops with new Windows 11 devices.

Upgrading to Windows 11 brings benefits for staff and the wider health service, including:

  • New features within Windows 11 itself.
  • Improved security that will help protect devices and data from cyber threats.
  • A modern interface that is more intuitive and user-friendly.
  • Greater compatibility with new tools and applications that support patient care and healthcare delivery.

Looking Ahead

While not without its challenges, the rollout is on track for completion by end of March 2026. This means that over the next 6 months, staff across the country will see their devices upgraded and will gain access to the new features and security updates available with Windows 11.
