Dr. Brendan Murphy appointed Chief Medical Information Officer for Ireland’s National EHR Programme
We are delighted to announce that Dr. Brendan Murphy will take up the role of Chief Medical Information Officer for the National EHR from 3rd November 2025.
Dr. Murphy brings with him a wealth of experience and deep commitment to improving care across the health service. A Consultant Paediatrician and Neonatologist at University Hospital Waterford (UHW) and Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at University College Cork, he has made an extraordinary contribution to advancing digital health and clinical leadership within the HSE.
Having qualified from University College Dublin in 1989, Dr. Murphy completed Higher Specialist Paediatric and Subspecialist Neonatology training in Edinburgh and a Fellowship in Neonatal–Perinatal Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston. He returned to Ireland in 2002 as a Consultant Neonatologist in Cork, where he went on to hold several key leadership roles.
With a Diploma in Healthcare Management (RCSI) and a First-Class Honours MSc in Healthcare Leadership (UCC), Dr. Murphy has led and supported major national initiatives that have transformed neonatal and maternity care. From his central role in commissioning Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) in 2007, to his leadership in NICORE Ireland (Neonatal Intensive Care Outcomes Research and Evaluation), Universal Newborn Hearing Screening, and the Informing Families of their Child’s Disability project—his work has consistently improved outcomes for patients and families.
Most notably, Dr. Murphy has been Clinical Lead for Neonatology and Clinical Risk Manager for the Maternity and Newborn Clinical Management System (MN-CMS) since 2013. His leadership has been instrumental in implementing Ireland’s first national Electronic Health Record (EHR) for mothers and infants, now live in six of the country’s nineteen maternity hospitals, including all the tertiary maternity centres caring for the most premature extremely low birthweight infants in Ireland.
Dr. Murphy’s extensive clinical experience, leadership, and dedication to innovation make him an invaluable addition to the HSE Technology and Transformation senior management team. We look forward to his continued contributions as he helps guide the development and implementation of the National EHR, building on his remarkable achievements to date.
