What are Personas?

They are fictional, generalized characters that encompass the various needs, goals, and behaviours of real people.

  • Patient Persona: An outline view of the person. It presents a snapshot of their demographic details, their background, their underlying health status and their goals and frustrations. It also outlines their familiarity with using technology
  • Patient Scenario: It describes their journey in relation to a particular interaction with the health service. It outlines who they interact with, why and the role that the Electronic Health Record capabilities play during this journey
  • Health Service Professionals Persona: An outline view of the person. It presents a snapshot of their demographic details, their role and where they are based in the health system. It also outlines their familiarity with using technology
  • Health Service Professionals Scenario: It describes typical activities during their workday and how these activities will be performed using the capabilities in the Electronic Health Record

What are the aims of the workshops?

The focus of the workshops will be to create both patient personas and health service professional personas. Participants will be asked to work in groups to create a description of a person that interacts with the health service, and to create scenarios of patient journeys.

The personas will focus on the following settings

  • Community services
  • Mental Health services
  • Acute care
  • Paediatric care
  • Integrated Care

What is an EHR?

A National Electronic Health Record (EHR), is a comprehensive solution that supports the creation and sharing of key patient information. It is a core capability required for the future delivery of healthcare. It will move us from a position where patient records and key information is locked in a paper format and within specific organisations, to an environment where digital patient records are shared securely across care settings with appropriate consent. This will result in:

  • Better, safer clinical decision making,
  • More informed and engaged patients and citizens,
  • Integration of services across care settings,
  • Increased availability of information to enable proactive management of patients and conditions,
  • Improved patient outcomes.
