HSE Technology & Transformation at the NCI Project Showcase 2025 - Supporting Innovation in Computing Education

HSE Technology & Transformation attended the 2025 National College of Ireland (NCI) School of Computing Project Showcase, an annual event that highlights the technical innovation and practical problem-solving skills of NCI’s final-year computing students.

The showcase featured a wide range of student projects, spanning areas such as AI, gaming, data analytics, sustainability, healthcare, and cybersecurity. Each project represented the culmination of months of focused work and demonstrated how applied digital skills can contribute to addressing real-world challenges.

This year’s cohort, as noted during the opening remarks by Prof Paul Stynes, Dean -School of Computing  and the President of NCI Gina Quin, represented one of the most successful graduating groups in terms of First Class Honours. The event drew strong support from across academia and industry, with a number of employers and sponsors engaging with the students throughout the day.

Recognising Technical Excellence and Real-World Application

As part of our role in supporting future digital talent, HSE Technology & Transformation sponsored the Silver Award for this year’s showcase. The award was presented by Sean Toner from the Training and Development team.

The Silver Award was awarded to Kyle White for his project Orrery — a 3D stellar system generator and simulator built using Unity Engine and Blender. The project combines real-world physics and exoplanet data to create an educational and design tool that is both technically accomplished and conceptually rich. Orrery stood out for its technical execution, creativity, and potential application in both education and visualisation.

Other awards presented on the day included:

  • Gold Award (sponsored by Citi): EcoDetect – Sean-Robert Ntonya
  • Bronze Award (sponsored by AWS): Smart Fitness Plan Generator – Xue Xiangze
  • Ada Lovelace Open Innovation Award: Warrior Tournaments – Eve Gibney
  • Best Project in BSc Honours in Technology Management (sponsored by NCI): Private Analysis – Amalia Moraru
  • Best BSc (Hons) in Computing Project (Fidelity Investment):  MessageFlow - Constantin Gavrila

Throughout the day, members of the HSE TT team engaged with students and reviewed a number of the projects, several of which aligned with key digital transformation themes relevant to the health service including data analytics, secure infrastructure, and user-centred service design.

Looking to the Future

Participation in events like the NCI Project Showcase forms part of HSE Technology and Transformations ongoing engagement with Ireland’s wider digital ecosystem. By supporting early-career developers and recognising high-quality student work, we aim to build awareness of the opportunities that exist to contribute to the public health system through digital careers.

We extend our thanks to NCI for organising the event, to the students for sharing their work, and to all collaborators involved in preparing such a strong and diverse showcase.
